Case Study: The Suffolk

In the lead up to the opening of The Suffolk, a restaurant with rooms in Aldeburgh, we created a series of 7 short films and a combined showreel that celebrated the local growers, producers and the surrounding Suffolk landscape.

The ultimate aim was to capture a ‘sense of place‘ and provide The Suffolk with a library of meaningful content to help them tell their story.

Dean Fryer The Fisherman

For 42 years Dean has been setting out from Aldeburgh beach between two and three o’clock in the morning and returning ashore by eight o’clock seven days a week, weather permitting.

He recalls the mornings when 25 fishing boats would head out into the darkness at this time. Now there are just two.

Dean lands daily on Aldeburgh beach, only 200m from the restaurant. The catch of the day often includes lobster, crab, plaice and sea bass.

Pinneys of Orford

There is no producer in the land that epitomises a local food hero better than Bill Pinney. His family smokehouse on the shore of Butley Creek is a testament to traditional processes.

‘For many years we have prided ourselves on running a sustainable business, passionate about protecting the Suffolk coastal fisheries. Our ethos is to use low impact methods of fishing that protect the environment and care for local fish stocks, restoring oyster beds and using traditional methods to fish. Alongside the Smokehouse we also have two fishing boats ‘Jolene’ and ‘Southern Cross’, that provide fresh daily catches of seasonal fish including sea bass, skate, lobster and crabs.’

Salter & King Butchers

“From the first day we arrived in in August 2020 Gerard and his awesome team at Salter & King made us feel so welcome and made sure we were serving the best meat possible. They work with only the best local organic herds and will supply us with the delicious beef for our menu. If you are ever on the high street in Aldeburgh we strongly suggest that you get in to check out all of the amazing things they do… good meat matters”

Combining pasture-fed, naturally reared and slow-grown meat with a passionate and progressive approach to butchery, we offer exceptional organic, free-range and traditional-breed meat from our cohort of enlightened Suffolk farmers.

White House Farm

Keeping it local, our seasonal salads make it from patch to plate in no time. Hand picked daily by Arty at White House Farm, eighteen minutes from our door, to be precise.

‘Little Japan’ Beach

“Our head chef James preparing a lobster from Pinney’s as the sun goes down on another beautiful day on the River Alde. We’re really excited to be developing dishes that are cooked over natural coals. We can’t wait to open so we can share them with you…”

Aldeburgh

The Suffolk is an elegant restaurant with rooms in the heart of Aldeburgh. Only a stone’s throw away from the pebble beach and next to all of the wonderful independent retailers on a bustling high street. We offer a tranquil resting place to escape the hustle bustle of every day life.
